Collection Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept artifact donations?

Yes. Please see Donate an Artifact for more information on the types of objects the Museum considers and the process of donation.

Can I see an object that my family member donated?

Absolutely! We do ask that you make an appointment with the Curator to ensure that we are prepared. A minimum of one-week notice is appreciated.

When will my object be on exhibit?

It is difficult to say exactly when an object will be on exhibit. While the Museum is able to display a significant number of objects, there are far more than we can exhibit at any given time. Objects in the Museum’s collection are utilized not only for physical exhibits at the Museum, but also in temporary exhibits, social media, written articles, and research. We also loan objects to other cultural and educational institutions.

Can the Museum tell me what my objects are worth?

Museums and their staff are prohibited from providing monetary values of objects for both legal and ethical reasons. There are a number of professional organizations that can help you find an accredited appraiser.

Are my object donations tax deductible?

Because donation guidelines are fluid, we recommend consulting with your tax professional or the Internal Revenue Service for the most up-to-date rules. As a registered 501(c)3, the Museum can provide confirmation of the donation; however, it will not contain any appraisal information. That should be completed by an independent professional prior to donation.

Can you help me preserve my own objects?

The Museum is in the business of preserving history and we LOVE to share advice! Staff are always thrilled to provide ideas and resources to help you care for your family treasures. Feel free to reach out to the Curator to get started!

Will the Museum ever remove my donation from the collection?

The possibility does exist that over time objects may be “deaccessioned” or removed from the collection for a variety of reasons. This is a specific process, guided by the Museum’s Collections Management Policy, that ensures the collection continues to support the mission of the Sheboygan County Museum.

Can you help me research my ancestor?

Possibly. However, the majority of genealogical materials are held by another separate organization in Sheboygan County – the Sheboygan County Historical Research Center located in Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin.

What is the difference between the Sheboygan County Museum and the Sheboygan County Historical Research Center?

We know it can be confusing. The Museum is the primary repository for historical objects related to the area, while the Research Center is the primary archive (photographs, paper, genealogical materials). Jokingly, we say if you dust it, contact the Museum, if you file it contact SCHRC. If there is a question, feel free to reach out to either organization. We work together extensively to ensure the preservation of local history.
