Live Forever Poetry
The Voyage Forward
A Poetry Duet by Colleen Machut
The Voyage Forward is based on interviews with Sheboygan native Deb Sabol-Williams about her experiences interviewing family members who lived during the time of the historic women’s rights movement in Wisconsin. This poem presents the perspectives of two different Sheboygan women during the time period of the women’s rights/suffragist movement. It was written as part of the Telling the Full History grant.
Carry This Nation
by Claire Carlson
Inspired by Carry Nation, “During her years as an anti-alcohol advocate in the late 19th century, Nation built a reputation as a fearless, even unhinged reformer who would go to any length to save people from drunkenness. With the help of a genius for spectacle and public relations, Nation helped turn a reform agenda into a scene, and herself into a reforming force to be reckoned with. While she died nine years before Prohibition began, Nation’s loud voice echoed in the United States’ prohibition of what she saw as a dangerous scourge.” Read more about Carry Nation from History.com
The mission/purpose of the Live Forever Project is to keep memories alive through the power of the arts and to empower community members to participate in this mission, no matter what level of artistic experience they have, or where they happen to be in their personal journey. We gather stories from elders about their lives, then share the stories publicly through art forms such as theater, music, songwriting, dance, poetry, and visual art. By doing this, we seek to preserve and share the stories, honor the people who lived them, and help all of us remember who we are. We seek to understand the human experience and to connect people and generations by helping them appreciate their lives and the lives around them. In this way, the stories and people will live on forever.
